Comprehensive schools in Turku
The Turku Urban Research Programme implements the research project "Primary schools as centres of learning and well-being in Turku" (2022-2023) in cooperation between the Centre for Lifelong Learning and Education (CELE) of the University of Turku, the Research Centre for Education, Assessment and Learning (REAL) of Tampere University, and the Research Group on Child and Youth Health Promotion (NEDIS).
What is it about?
The research project examines (1) the distribution and content of document- and register-weighted teaching between primary schools in Turku and the student selection of schools and school classes, and (2) the development of learning, motivation and well-being of sixth-graders from primary school to upper secondary school using longitudinal student data (spring 2022, autumn 2022 and spring, 2023). The study analyses potential differences between different classes (pupil-selected weighted special classes vs. pupil-selected general classes) in students' learning-to-learn skills, motivation, social relationships, general and academic well-being, and how students rated the classroom climate in relation to learning and schooling.
In May 2022, sixth-graders in Finnish-language schools in Turku (excluding special schools and hospital schools) were asked to participate in the survey by completing a computer-based task pack in class. The same age group were invited to participate in the autumn of 2022 in the seventh grade and autumn of 2023 in the eighth grade. The task pack included cognitive tests measuring general reasoning skills, mathematical reasoning and reading comprehension skills, as well as attitude questionnaires related to motivation and learning, which also included aspects related to pupils' well-being. Pupils could watch a video presentation of what the research involves and decide whether to participate before starting the research tasks. Participation in the survey has been voluntary.
